The robust path is to look at the freeze-frame data, the sensor's voltage behavior, and the long-term fuel trim before ordering. That is the same discipline as measuring rotor runout: let the vehicle tell you which system is bad, then replace the part that is actually wrong.

K24 Timing Chain Marks and the Muffler Lesson

Another place where Policy B gets expensive is engine timing. On a Honda K24, the K24 timing chain marks have to line up with the crank and cam sprockets at true TDC. It is not enough to see a colored link and assume the rest of the engine agrees. If the chain is one tooth off, the engine can run poorly or the pistons can contact the valves. I watched a customer-paid timing job turn into a cylinder head removal because nobody stopped to verify the marks before buttoning everything up.

Exhaust work has a similar story in my log. A technician at Clarks Muffler once showed me a car that was in for a muffler quote. It sounded horrible; it smelled raw; I was ready to order a new rear muffler. The guy pointed at the flex pipe first. The flex pipe was leaking and the noise was traveling through the system. The muffler itself was fine. That 10-minute check saved the customer a part they didn't need and preserved the shop's reputation.

So Which Should You Order?

If the vehicle lives in a salt state, sits outside, or is owned by someone who notices details, I choose Zimmermann coated rotors. The extra cost is smaller than one rust complaint, and the coating gives the entire brake job a visual finish that matches the labor quality. If the vehicle operates in a dry climate with frequent brake use and the customer isn't going to care about hat rust, a standard rotor can be entirely appropriate.

The key is to separate the part from the diagnosis. Zimmermann coated rotors are not a patch for runout. A new oxygen sensor is not a patch for a misfire caused by a failing coil. A muffler is not a patch for a leaking flex pipe. And a K24 timing chain job is not complete until the K24 timing chain marks are verified against the factory service information.

When in doubt, compare against the condition you found, not against the price in your cart. That habit has saved me more comebacks than any brand preference. Your shop's situation may be different, but this is the rule that finally made my comeback log go quiet.
