Full disclosure: I'm a quality manager at an automotive parts manufacturer. What follows is based on ten years of inspecting parts and reviewing warranty claims—not a substitute for a professional diagnosis of your specific vehicle.
First Things First: There's No Universal Answer
"Can I still drive with this?" is the question our customer support forwards to me more than any other. Someone's car is making a new noise, the brake pedal feels different, or the exhaust just got a lot louder. They want to know: can I deal with this later, or do I need to stop right now?
The answer depends on which part failed, how it failed, and what the consequences of continued driving are. So I'm going to break it down by the scenarios I encounter most often—organized from "stop driving immediately" to "annoying, but you can get to the shop."

Scenario 3: LS Exhaust Manifold Leak
Verdict: Driveable short-term; fix it before the end of the week.
LS engines—the 5.3L, 6.0L, 6.2L family—are notorious for cracking exhaust manifolds around the flange. The symptom is a ticking sound that follows engine RPM, usually worse on cold start.
Can you drive with a leaking LS exhaust manifold? Yes, physically. But there are consequences you shouldn't ignore:
- Exhaust gas in the cabin: If you smell exhaust while driving, that's carbon monoxide. Crack the windows and treat it as urgent.
- Oxygen sensor misreads: The leak upsets the O2 readings, which causes the computer to over-fuel. That fouls plugs and eventually kills catalytic converters—a far more expensive fix.
- It gets worse: The crack grows over time. A small leak becomes a manifold replacement instead of a weld.
This might surprise you, but I'm not going to recommend a specific manifold brand—we don't make them, and anyone who tells you they're the expert in every automotive part category is overpromising. What I'll say is: buy from a supplier who publishes material specs and testing data. The parts that fail are almost always the ones where the manufacturer couldn't be bothered to measure things like wall thickness or material grade.
Scenario 4: Muffler Fell Off—Can I Still Drive?
Verdict: Yes, technically. Legally and health-wise: no.

- Is it safety-critical? Brakes, steering, tires, suspension. Any compromise = don't drive. Non-negotiable.
- Can waiting cause major secondary failure? A stuck-closed thermostat destroys engines. A manifold leak destroys catalytic converters. Fix these before they become expensive.
- Are you legal on the road? Missing muffler, exhaust leak, emissions failure. You can pay for a repair, or you can pay for a repair plus a ticket—your choice.
- Will the repair cost go up? It almost always does. Cracked rotors become caliper damage. Manifold leaks become converter replacements. Repair things at the first sign.
